Man killed in drive-by shooting outside Birmingham motorcycle club identified

Authorities have released the name of a man killed in a Saturday-night shooting in Birmingham.

The Jefferson County coroner’s office identified the victim as Carl Sanford Gardner. He was 47.

Gardner was killed Saturday night in a drive-by shooting outside an Midtown Iron motorcycle club. The shots rang out just before 11 p.m. in the 1700 block of Avenue D. Birmingham police responded to the scene on a report of a person shot and found Gardner unresponsive in the roadway.

He was taken to UAB Hospital’s Trauma Center where he was pronounced dead at 11:26 p.m.. Authorities said the suspect or suspects opened fire into a crowd standing outside the club.

Witnesses reported multiple shots were fired. Officer Rod Mauldin said the investigation shows shots were fired from a mid-size sedan that passed by the location. Police radios issued lookout bulletins for the vehicle shortly after the shooting.

Police have not announced any arrests.
