CHISHOLM — A local motorcycle group is coordinating a benefit ride to help out patients battling breast cancer.
The Iron Range Motorcycle Club annual President’s Charity Ride is raising money for Care Partners, to help the non-profit assist breast cancer patients on the Iron Range, residing in St. Louis County.
Tom Daniels, organizer for this year’s ride, told that he chose Care Partners based on his personal experience. When a family member of his was diagnosed with breast cancer, Daniels said Care Partners helped out with travel expenses between the Iron Range and Duluth.
“It’s my way of giving back,” Daniels said.
The IRMC Presidents Charity Ride started about a decade ago. It typically involves about 70 motorcyclists.
“It depends on the weather,” said Daniels.
This year’s ride starts out at Tom & Jerry’s with registration beginning at 11 a.m. on July 13. Kickstands go up at noon, with the ride heading east to Aurora. It then circles around to the Thirsty Moose Bar on Highway 37. About six stops are planned along the ride route.
Since its beginnings nearly 20 years ago, Care Partners has been providing assistance to cancer patients on the Iron Range.
Tasia Hoag, executive director for Care Partners said the grassroots organization relying on donations served less than 25 people when it began in 2001. In recent years, it provided funding from 200 to 400 individuals annually.
“Every year it depends on who gives us a call,” Hoag told the Tribune Press.
Care Partners serves people residing in Iron Range cities in St. Louis County. Hoag said the type of assistance it provides depends on the individual, but that transportation is one of the most frequent needs. Medical bills, food and lodging, daily living expenses are examples of the kinds of things people have received help with.
“Everyone’s situation is different,” Hoag said.
About a half dozen local businesses are listed as sponsors for this year’s ride. The City of Chisholm is providing in-kind services, mainly providing barricades for the registration area, between Second and Third Avenue on Lake Street.
All riders are welcome to participate. Cost is $20 for a single rider, or $30 for double. More information on Care Partners is available at carepartnersmn.org.
