Sturgis 2019: 15 injured in Tuesday crashes near Sturgis

Sturgis-2019

STURGIS — Seven more injury crashes occurred Tuesday in and around Sturgis, bringing the total number at this year’s motorcycle rally to 28.

Fifteen people on motorcycles sustained injuries in those seven crashes, and eight of those 15 were not wearing helmets, according to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.

Despite those injuries, as of Wednesday at 6 a.m., there had been five fewer injury crashes than the 33 that had occurred by the same point last year.

Drug and DUI arrest numbers have continued to outpace those from last year’s rally. By Wednesday morning, 201 felony and misdemeanor drug arrests had been made in Sturgis and the Rapid City district, compared to 142 by the same time in 2018.

No additional vehicles or cash were seized at the rally in the 24-hour period ending Wednesday morning.
