Two armed robbers who stole thousands from a Gold Coast bank were almost stopped by the alleged president of an outlaw motorcycle club before narrowly escaping.
The man and woman, dressed in black with their faces covered by helmets and armed with a handgun, entered the Burleigh Waters Suncorp Bank yesterday and stole $5000 in cash.
During their escape, however, some of the money was dropped by the pair and then they were confronted by the alleged Gold Coast Hells Angels president Greg Pearce.
“The guy in front of me (Pearce) said, ‘where are you going with that bag mate?'” witness Joel Beard told 9News.
“The big guy was going to grab a trolley and throw it at them to try and stop them.”
Pearce later told his lawyer that he told the robbers “nobody does a robbery in my area”.
Mr Beard said the male armed robber then aimed the handgun towards Pearce, although the alleged bikie member didn’t move and continued to chase the pair in his ute.
Police were today left baffled by the situation – the first bank robbery in the area in years.
“Obviously as an individual (Pearce) has performed a brave action,” Detective Acting Inspector Chris Tritton told reporters.
“We obviously don’t recommend that.”
The two thieves managed to outrun Pearce on a motorbike but were forced to dump the vehicle on Dunlin Drive after it ran out of petrol.
They tonight remain on the run and police have appealed for witnesses to help authorities identify them.
