Police lose legal battle against Rebels bikie boss over lack of evidence

WA Police have lost a legal battle against the state’s biggest bikie boss because prosecutors didn’t have enough evidence to go ahead with a planned trial.

On Monday Rebels bikie club boss Nick Martin was acquitted of endangering a life.

It was mean to be the start of a day-long trial, but Martin spent less than five minutes in front of a magistrate at Joondalup Court.

The 49-year-old was accused of repeatedly punching an associate in front of shocked families and children at the Malaga Markets last year.

He was in the company of other club members at the time.

But no witnesses were willing to testify, and the prosecution didn’t have enough evidence to proceed any further.

On Monday Martin walked out of court wearing thongs, sunglasses, and a smile on his face.

Not over yet

Martin is still facing serious tax evasion and money laundering charges brought on after a 22-month police blitz code-named Operation Ironfish.

Martin will be back in court in January and could spend a maximum of 13 years behind bars if found guilty.

Those charges were among 207 laid as a result of the bikie blitz.

A total of 43 people will face court, including 18 Rebel bikie members.

Drugs, cash and 22 unlicensed guns were also seized as part of Operation Ironfish.
