A Melbourne underworld figure who once drove himself to hospital after being shot in the head has fronted court over allegations he was speeding at more than 200km/h when he was involved in a crash last month.
Nabil Moughnieh – formerly known as Nabil Maghnie –has links to the Comanchero Motorcycle Club and was previously investigated for shooting former Bandidos enforcer Toby Mitchell.
He appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday charged with conduct endangering life, driving while disqualified and committing an indictable offence while on bail.
It related to a crash at at the intersection of Donnybrook Road and Epping Road in Woodstock on May 25, in which it is alleged Mr Moughnieh was driving his black Range Rover at more than 200km/h when he lost control at a roundabout and hit a ute.
He was arrested on Plenty Road, Bundoora about 11am on Wednesday.
Mr Moughnieh, 43, has been a significant figure within the Comanchero MC, the Motorcycle Club suspected of being behind the 2016 arson attacks and drive-by shootings at strip club Kittens.
He and associates were also the subject of a police raid in March last year that swooped on Melbourne law firms, accountancy businesses, brothels and tattoo parlours in a money-laundering investigation targeting the Club’s wealth.
In 2016, Mr Moughnieh was shot in the head through the front windscreen of his Holden Commodore and drove himself to the Northern Hospital in Epping in a critical condition.
He’d previously been investigated for shooting Mitchell, the former Bandido, outside a Brunswick gym in 2011. Mr Moughnieh was investigated alongside Gavin Preston, who was in jail for shooting a drug dealer dead.
He was remanded over the latest driving incident and will appear again at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on September 17.
