Permanent memorial to Randolph motorcycle crash victims considered

Memorial Ride for Fallen 7

The town of Randolph is considering plans for a permanent memorial to seven motorcyclists who were killed in a crash over the summer.

All the victims were members of a Marines motorcycle club or relatives of members. They were headed to the Gorham American Legion post in June to prepare for an annual meeting when a truck crossed the center line on Route 2 and collided with them, according to police.

The driver of the truck, Volodymyr Zhukovskyy, has been charged with seven counts of negligent homicide.

The victims have been honored at fundraisers and motorcycle rides, but a permanent tribute is being considered. Officials with the Gorham American Legion said they want to build a memorial made of granite featuring the logos of the Jarheads Motorcycle Club and U.S. Marine Corps, along with benches and a parking area.

The memorial would cost about $12,000. Thanks to donations, the Legion is only $700 short of that goal.

A hearing was held Thursday night before the Randolph Planning Board. The proposal was well received.
