Organised crime figures, bikies and drug kingpins will be forced to tell police if they move house under proposed changes to the state’s anti-gun laws.
Firearm prohibition orders will also be made compatible with schemes in other states so new bans do not have to be applied for if people subject to orders move interstate.
Police have called for major changes to bolster the firearm prohibition order laws amid concerns they could be too easily dodge.
Responding to recommendations made by a parliamentary committee probing the laws, the State Government said yesterday that it would support the two key recommendations.
It also agreed to increased reviews of the operation of the laws and legislation to regulate the possession of digital blueprints to make firearms.
“The Andrews Government has turned its back on better gun laws operating successfully in NSW and instead is trying to reinvent the wheel on community safety,” Opposition police spokesman David Southwick said.
A government spokesman said: “The Victorian Government thanks the Legal and Social Issues Committee for its report and its comprehensive review of Firearms Prohibition Legislation in Victoria.”
