Rebels bikie and tow truck boss ‘assaulted’ man after Kardinya crash, police allege

A bikie club member and tow truck business boss has been charged following a violent assault on a crash victim.

The incident happened in Kardinya about 8pm on June 10 after the victim — a man in his 30s — was involved in a crash with another car on North Lake Road.

Several tow truck drivers attended, despite the victim making arrangements via his insurer for towage of his crashed vehicle.

One of the tow truck drivers continued to pressure the man into using his services and called a “more senior representative” of the tow truck business to the scene, who then started taking photos of the crash victim’s family, police said.

But when the victim tried to take a photo of him, he allegedly grabbed the man by his neck and physically assaulted him.

The alleged offender, 49, who police said was a member of the Rebels bikie club, fled the scene when he realised another person filmed the assault.

Gang Crime Squad detective senior sergeant John Mottolini said the intimidation of, and assault on a crash victim is unacceptable.

“To see the gratuitous violence that is commonplace between outlaw motorcycle gang members be extended to a member of the public is of great concern to police,” he said.

“A car crash victim has enough to deal with – they don’t need to be fearful of tow truck drivers who are attending the crash scene.

“There are some great tow truck drivers out there that do more than is expected of them to assist car crash victims, however it is the actions of those who act like this tow truck driver that give other hard-working tow truck drivers a bad name.”

The man is due to face the Fremantle Magistrates Court with a common assault charge on July 13.
