Mercanti remanded in custody until Thursday after he took incoming call from Casuarina Prison. The caller is alleged to be a member of Mongols MC which name cant be revealed due to suppression order.
The caller is charged with serious offences including murder, which he denies.
The phone call was approximately 10 minutes long and was recorded by prison officers. The police claims that topics discussed during the call was related to Mongols MC and their associates and activities in prison.
Mercanti’s lawyer listened to the phone call but it was decided that a transcript needed to be prepared because “the police have a view and I have a view (so there) has to be a transcript so the court can determine”.
The bail hearing was postponed until Thursday after Magistrate Brian Mahon flagged that the content of the conversation might be relevant.
