UPDATE: Six people charged following 2012 murder of Adelaide

Hells Angels

Six people have been charged over the murder of Jason De Ieso who was shot dead in his Pooraka workshop in 2012.

Key points:

  • Jason De Ieso was shot dead in his Pooraka workshop in 2012
  • CCTV footage shows nine men walking towards the business with six of them carrying firearms
  • Five people have been charged with his murder, and another with aiding them

Police say Mr De Ieso’s only mistake was maintaining a childhood friendship with a man who went on to become a Fink bikie.

They say nine male members of the Hells Angels North Crew walked into Mr De Ieso’s Unique Custom Paint and Panel business on November 21, 2012, and shot him dead.

CCTV footage from the workshop, previously released by investigators, shows nine men walking towards the front of the business, with at least six of those carrying firearms.

Two men — a 34-year-old from Lightsview and a 30-year-old from Clovelly Park — were arrested in Adelaide over the alleged murder about 8:00am today.

Another three — all brothers — were arrested at their homes in Goodwood, Mile End and St Morris about 3:00pm.

They were charged with murder and are being interviewed by detectives.

They are expected to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Monday.

A woman was arrested on Queensland’s Gold Coast and has been charged with assisting an offender.

Police will apply for an extradition order in the Southport Magistrates Court this afternoon.

Taskforce created to gather evidence

Detective Superintendent Des Bray told a media conference this afternoon that police had identified the nine men allegedly involved in 2012 but did not have enough evidence at the time to charge them.

He said a taskforce was created “in complete secrecy” in January 2018 to take another attempt at gathering more evidence.

A ninth man allegedly involved had died since the allegedmurder, Superintendent Bray said.

He said the motive for the murder appeared to be “ongoing gang conflict” between the Hells Angels and the Finks.

A Molotov cocktail had been thrown at a property in Parafield Gardens connected with the Hells Angels the night before Mr De Ieso’s alleged murder, he said.

Superintendent Bray said the person the Hells Angels suspected of the attack was not involved.

“Not only did they have the wrong person, they then killed an innocent person because of stupid gang violence,” he said.

Public urged to come forward

Superintendent Bray said there was no evidence Mr De Ieso, 33, had any connection with “criminality or gang life”.

“Jason’s only mistake was in being a loyal person who maintained a friendship with a childhood friend throughout his life,” he said.

“That person went on to become a Fink — and that relationship ultimately cost Jason his life.

“Jason’s family are good, decent people and we want to solve this case for them and they very much want everyone involved arrested and prosecuted.”

Police are hoping to arrest another two men over the murder.

Superintendent Bray urged anyone with more information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Two detectives involved in the investigation will be available to speak to callers this evening.
