A Sturgis police officer was seriously injured on Thursday morning when he crashed his motorcycle while involved in a pursuit.
The crash happened at 2:05 a.m. on U.S. Highway 14A, two miles southwest of Sturgis. According to the South Dakota Highway Patrol, the officer was pursuing another motorcycle rider when he lost control while negotiating a curve and went into the north ditch.
The 54-year-old officer was thrown from his motorcycle. He was wearing a helmet but suffered serious, non-life-threatening injuries, the Highway Patrol said.
The officer has not been identified. It is unknown why he was pursuing the other motorcycle.
The crash was one of several that have been reported during the 2019 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. So far, only one person — a 29-year-old Oklahoma man — has been killed in a crash during this year’s rally.
