LANSING — Lansing police officers are investigating a suspected murder in southwest Lansing.
Reports of a shooting brought Lansing police officers to a parking lot behind the building at 4880 S. Waverly Road at about 4:42 a.m. Saturday. They found a man dead with multiple gunshot wounds, according to a press release.
The 23-year-old Lansing man was pronounced dead at the scene.
“We’re still trying to push forward with some developments on that situation,” Lansing police Chief Daryl Green said Saturday morning. “We do have reports that there was some kind of gathering and an altercation took place.”
He said the incident was not a random attack and there is no threat to the public.
Investigators remained on scene Saturday morning. An ambulance could be seen driving behind the building that appears to have once housed a check cashing business. Neighbors described it as an after-hours motorcycle club.
Green could not confirm what the building is used for, if anything, but did say there are no registered cabaret or liquor licenses associated with the address. Officers are continuing attempts to contact the property owner, he said.
Todd Hudson lives nearby and said he hears motorcycle engines behind the building revving all night, nearly every day. He learned about the shooting when his wife brought him to the window to look outside early Saturday morning.
“It’s kind of bad when you see police across the street from your house,” he said. “I have a son, I have a wife, it’s not good.”
Green said police would release the identity of the victim once all of his family members are notified.
“Certainly, we’re taking it very seriously,” Green said. “This is definitely an issue we want resolved as soon as possible.”
