1 killed in early-morning shooting at Birmingham, AL motorcycle club

A man was killed early Monday in a shooting inside a Birmingham motorcycle club.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as David Franklin Lee Jr. He was 37.

The shooting happened at 2:06 a.m. at Showstoppers Motorcycle Club on Coosa Street. Authorities said some kind of argument happened which led to a fight and then gunfire. Sgt. Johnny Williams said Lee was found unresponsive inside the club.

Lee was pronounced dead on the scene at 2:19 a.m. Williams said Lee was involved in the altercation with the unknown suspect.

The club was founded in 2002. Several years ago, they launched a group ride between Birmingham and Tuscaloosa dedicated to motorcycle safety.

The clubhouse was the scene of another shooting in 2014 that left two people dead and two others wounded. Stevens Hicks and Wilbert Hawkins were killed Aug. 31, 2104 in a gunfight outside the club. Authorities determined that shooting was linked to the death of a Georgia rapper killed two weeks earlier at a motorcycle club in Columbus.

Lee is the city’s fourth homicide in 2020, and the fourth countywide. No arrests have been announced.
