Local motorcycle club wins AMA national award

HARPURSVILLE (WBNG) — Square Deal Riders Motorcycle Club in Harpursville is officially the American Motorcycle Association’s Club of the Year.

“We’re all like family we all work together and it really is a great honor it makes all of the work worth it,” said Vice President Mike Williams.

Square deal made the cut over more than 1,000 clubs nationwide.

“We have about 1,100 to maybe 1,200 organizers throughout the country and Square Deal Riders here is one of our top clubs,” said Joe Bromley of the American Motorcyclist Association.

The track offers events year round including snow scrambles like the ones that took place on Sunday.

“We’ve been running short track in the summer then in the winter we run winter races,” said Williams

Overtime, the track has attracted lifelong fans from all over.

“This track has so much history it’s outrageous it’s gone from the flat track it had to TT scrambles to the winter scrambles it has today,” said Thomas Myers of Susquehanna, PA who has been coming to the track for decades.

Organizers say that the sport attracts families to come out and ride together.

“It really is a true family sport the whole family the parents ride I’ve even seen both parents ride and the kids,” Williams said.

Bromley says the award isn’t just about what happens on the track.

“It’s not only the quality events but what they do within the community with some of the funding they’re making from some of these motorcycle events,” he said.

Square Deal giving back to the community that they call home.

“We do a scholarship to a graduate at Harpursville every year in the past we’ve helped out our ambulance crews buy ambulances and this past summer we did a road ride to benefit a local church,” said Williams.

Square Deal has been a fixture in Harpursville since 1937.
