Katiska’s treatment continues despite the corona – Ranta-aho and Tranberg still suspected

The trial of the so-called Katiska drug case continues this week against Janne Tranberg and Niko Ranta-aho, among other things with the treatment of serious drug offenses.

The Helsinki District Court was told in the morning that, at least today, the hearing would be held without the public due to the coronavirus situation, and that the public would not be able to follow the trial.

According to the indictments now under consideration, Janne Tranberg and Niko Ranta-aho imported and distributed less than two million tablets of different kinds in Finland. According to the prosecutor, most of them were Ksalol-branded drugs.

The drugs were brought to the cargo terminal in Vantaa and transported to Tampere, where they were stored by other people and where they were transported and further distributed, the summons states.

Each denies having acted in the manner the prosecutor considered.

Benzodiazepines, which include the active ingredient Ksalol, are one of the most common substance abuse drugs in Finland.

Strong sedative

Kaarlo Simojoki , chief physician and professor of substance abuse medicine at A-Clinic , says that the active ingredient in Ksalol, alprazolam, is relatively strong. For example, compared to the better known Diapam, diazepam, its potency is about 20 times higher. Half a milligram of alpratolam is equivalent to about ten milligrams of diazepam.

Benzodiazepines are used to treat anxiety and anxiety because they have a calming effect. When used in combination with other substances such as alcohol or opioids, they paralyze the brain too much.

– The whole system is paralyzed. Breathing stops, and at worst you die of that paralysis, Simojoki says.

The drug-related deaths reported in Finland in recent years have often involved the concomitant use of the active ingredient Subutex with buprenorphine or other opioids and benzodiazepines. According to Simojoki, about half of opioid users seeking substance treatment also have problem drug use with benzodiazepines. Two out of three problematic use of benzodiazepines seeking treatment, he says.

– Abuse is a big problem in Finland. Benzodiazepine is one of the most important abused substances in Finland, Simojoki says.
