An Ohio motorcyclist who was attempting to run from police died from his injuries after crashing his 2000 Honda on State Road 156 early Tuesday morning.
Shortly before 9 p.m. Tuesday, the Switzerland County Sheriff’s Office received a call concerning a possible intoxicated person leaving the Belterra Resort & Casino on a motorcycle traveling westbound on State Road 156 toward Vevay. Officers with the Switzerland County Sheriff’s Office and Vevay Police Department soon located the bike and attempted to conduct a traffic stop after traffic violations were observed.
The operator attempted to flee from the officers westbound on State Road 56 toward Madison. The officers soon lost sight of the motorcycle and slowed their speed. However, soon after that the officers located the motorcycle crashed along State Road 56 near Green Valley Road near the Switzerland/Jefferson County line. The driver of the bike was found nearby where he had been thrown from the motorcycle during the crash. The officers attempted to render first aid but were unable to revive the driver.
Richard Alan Owens, 53, of Hillsboro, Ohio, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office due to injuries sustained in the crash.
The Indiana State Police-Versailles Crash Reconstruction Team responded to the scene to conduct the investigation into the crash. That investigation is ongoing and toxicology results are pending at this time.
Indiana State Police were assisted by the Switzerland County Sheriff’s Office, Vevay Police Department, Switzerland County EMS, Jeff-Craig Fire Department, Jefferson County Coroner’s Office and Switzerland County Coroner’s Office.
