Mistrial declared in case against man accused in murder of Mecca Ramsey

Gregory Kincade

A mistrial has been declared in a case involving a fatal shooting at a Pontiac motorcycle club last year, due to a medical condition reportedly suffered late last week by defense attorney Jerome Sabbota.

Judge Shalina Kumar of Oakland County Circuit Court declared the mistrial Tuesday morning, and scheduled another trial in June for Gregory Kincade, accused of shooting to death Mecca Shea Ramseyat the Night Riders Motorcycle Club on April 27, 2019. Another man was also hit by the gunfire, which happened in the men’s bathroom at the club.

Kincade, 42, is charged with open murder, assault with intent to commit murder and firearms offenses.

Testimony had gotten underway on Feb. 10 and it appeared the prosecution was not far from wrapping up its case three days later. Among the witnesses called by assistant prosecutors Robert Novy and Lauren Benninger was the man injured in the shooting, Malcolm Chambers, who testified that he didn’t see Kincade pull the trigger but said Kincade came into the bathroom just before the shooting began and told him to look away or he’d be killed.

Jurors also heard from Ramsey’s sister, Keisha Ramsey, who testified that she, too, was at the club that night and that her brother told her trouble could be brewing with someone there, warning her not to get involved if there was an altercation. Ramsey was shot a short time later, hit 12 times by bullets.

Club officials testified to seeing Kincade come out of the bathroom soon after the shooting and that he was armed. They detained him until police arrived.

Ahead of the new trial, Kincade is scheduled to return to court for a status conference next month.
