Magic City Harley-Davidson is holding its third annual Burgers, Babes, & Bikes event on June 13, with Souris Valley Animal Shelter, New Horizon Motorcycle Club and the Berthold Police Department.
Kelsey Schlag, the finance and marketing manager at Magic City Harley-Davidson, organized the first Burgers, Babes, & Bikes event back in 2018.
Bike washes are found in several places. Bikers like to keep their bikes clean and sharp. “It’s a biker thing,” Schlag explained. “You get girls in bikinis and washing bikes, and people love it.”
Those who wish to attend and participate in activities do not have to have or ride a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. If anyone has a dirt bike or other kind of motorcycle, they can have their bike washed with the purchase of a ticket. To get a bike washed, the tickets are $10, and those proceeds will go to the Souris Valley Animal Shelter to fund a microchip clinic.
Getting dogs and cats microchipped is very important. If a pet gets out and isn’t able to find their own way home, someone may pick them up and take them to the shelter to be scanned for a microchip. All of the pet owner’s information is stored in the chip, including their name, address and phone number. If the pet has a microchip, the shelter staff will call the pet’s owner and let them know their pet is safe.
Schlag knew when she set up the event that she wanted the proceeds to go to a nonprofit of her choice. SVAS has become very close to her heart after she adopted her black lab mix named Opie. “Normally, I let people who helped me pick the nonprofit that they want (the funds) to go to, but this one I’m pretty adamant on. So it’s just a cause to my personal heart.”
Opie’s mother had arrived at SVAS pregnant and had her litter there. When the puppies were old enough to be adopted, the shelter had an event for people to name their own price to adopt them. Schlag and her family went to the shelter that day to look. “We had gone in, and I just knew I wasn’t leaving without him,” she said.
Opie is now two-and-a-half years old and has two younger corgi siblings.
Schlag reached out to New Horizon MC in hopes of getting their support. She said they’ve been really great in working with her. New Horizon MC will be sending some of its members to do the grilling for the event. The lunches are based on a free-will donation.
Burgers are the main course, likely being served alongside pasta salads and the like. The Sidelines Bar from Berthold is planning to bring beer and possibly some seltzers for those who do not drink beer.
Attendees bringing beer from home is not permitted. All alcoholic beverages will be served by Sidelines Bar only.
The Berthold Police Department reached out to Schlag last week and Chief Allen Schmidt shared his idea of a cornhole tournament to raise additional funds for SVAS. The cost to enter the tournament is $50 for doubles and $25 for singles. There will be an 80 percent payout to the winners and the remaining 20 percent will go to SVAS.
In addition, members of the Berthold Police Department will be present for security.
Staff members from SVAS will set up a table like they have the last two years. Last year, they brought some dogs that were up for adoption to interact with more people and raise their chances of being adopted.
The staff members at Magic City Harley-Davidson are still conscious of the COVID-19 pandemic, so all activities will take place outside. The food is to be served inside but it must be taken back outside to be eaten. They’ll be setting up the bike wash in the north parking lot and the cornhole tournament in the south parking lot.
Schlag reminds readers that the event is subject to being postponed or canceled, depending on if the weather cooperates and if any sort of major pandemic concerns are raised.
