The 2020 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally kicked off Saturday with several DUI and drug arrests, as well as a number of crashes, according to Sunday’s statistics from the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
The rally could become one of the largest public gatherings since the pandemic began, with organizers expecting 250,000 people from all over the country to make their way through Sturgis during the 10-day event.
That’s about half the number of bikers during a normal year, but the number of arrests, warnings, citations and crashes are keeping consistent with last year’s numbers, according to the SDDPS report.
A combined 58 people were arrested on misdemeanor and felony drug arrests, 17 of them felonies. At this time last year, 54 people had been arrested, with 23 of them being felony arrests.
Twenty-six people have been arrested for driving under the influence this year, as opposed to 22 this time last year.
While there have not been any fatal crashes so far during the rally, there have been 12 injury crashes so far, which is slightly more than this time last year. There have also been six non-injury crashes.
